Ruling on Extremism Regarding Saints

Shaykhul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah Al-Hanbali :

Whoever goes to extremes regarding the ‘saints’ (awliya)—whether he calls them ‘saints of God,’ ‘the people of God,’ ‘the wise,’ ‘philosophers,’ or any other names he associates with the names of the Prophets—and places them on the same level as the Prophets or regards them as superior to the Prophets, he must be asked to repent. If he repents, all well and good, otherwise he is to be executed; otherwise, he is to be executed.

من غلا في الأولياء ، أو من يسميهم أولياء الله ، أو يسميهم أهل الله ، أو يسميهم الحكماء أو الفلاسفة أو غير ذلك من الأسماء التي يقرنها بأسماء الأنبياء ، وجعلهم مثل الأنبياء ، أو أفضل من الأنبياء ، فإنه يستتاب ، فإن تاب وإلا قتل
